999 Club
The 999 Club is a small charity based in Deptford providing advice, advocacy, shelter, health checks activities for homeless people in Lewisham & South London.
For 6 months Make Mee Jaime volunteered at the centre running a monthly sewing workshop. Every month was different and we found ourselves working on all kinds of projects, clothing repairs, gifts, sewing projects. Some of the participants had never used a sewing machine before but everyone got stuck in designing and making and left with something special.
We had great feedback from attendee's who found the workshop a calming and safe space they could get creative in, meet new people and be proud of what they had achieved.
Attendee's said
They attended because:
- They were "depressed and trying to focus."
- "To do something for fun/quick/easy (enjoyment)."
- "Interested in learning something new."
What they got out of the activity:
- "Interesting activity. I am very isolated and used to do singing workshops, but haven’t done them for 4 years. So I was happy to be part of a group. It reduced my isolation, sewing and talking to people."
- “Meeting people and speaking to others”
- “I feel really good. I feel elated. I feel proud—this is the 2nd bag I’ve made. I feel so good inside. Really happy.”
