WORKSHOP IDEAS

Here are some workshop ideas for inspiration. If you can’t see what you are looking for in this list feel free to get in touch (form at the bottom of this page) and we will try and make it happen for you!

Introduction to darning

  • Darning is an age-old technique for repairing holes in cloth.  Maybe you have a holey sock, or a favourite moth eaten jumper you want to save but don’t know how. In this workshop you’ll learn the basics of darning, tips for visible and invisible mending and get to try it out yourself.

  • According to WRAP repairing a hole in your favourite wool jumper instead of buying a new one could save over 16kg CO2e, equivalent to leaving a standard (60W) lightbulb on for over 50 days.

    Not only is it restorative for your garments, darning is slow and mindful technique, it can be great for unwinding, relaxing and taking your mind off other things.

  • Participants can bring an item in with a hole or practice on our scrap fabrics.

    We will bring an array of yarns, wools and equipment that you might need.

    We will give you an introductory lesson on how to darn with support and guidance as you try it for yourself

    We can pitch the difficulty and offer different levels to suit the abilities of the participants on the day.

    We recommend wool and knitted garments or thicker items like jeans/jackets.

  • We can deliver a quick fire 1 hour darning session to cover the basics.

    We do recommend if you can spare it 1.5 to 2.5 hours for this workshop to get the full benefit and leave with a finished example.

  • We can bring our darning wools anywhere! Or you can come to us.

    All we need is tables and chairs.

    This workshop is also available as an online session. We can send you out kits for participants so they can join in remotely.

Sashiko Stitching

Mending Drop in

  • We bring along our entire mending kit, sewing machines, darning wools, buttons, hammers you name it. Your team can bring in their broken garments and homewares and we do our best to show them out to fix the items themselves.

  • This kind of repair activity plays a powerful role in reducing textile waste and cutting carbon emissions.

    The WRAP 'Displacement Rates Untangled' report reveals that when people repair items, a remarkable 82.2% of the time, this displaces the purchase of a new garment. This means that four out of five repairs effectively prevent a new garment from entering the market.

  • Participants can bring an item that needs mending or practice on our scrap fabrics.

    This session often works best as a drop in, people can spend however long they can/need to to get the items fixed. Or just pop along for some advice.

    We will give our expert guidance on how to repair different items.

    Some repairs might be beyond the scope of what we can do during the session but we will do our best to give follow on advice.

  • We recommend at least 2 - 3 hours for this workshop to get the full benefit. The drop in can last as long as you want it to.

    If drop in doesn’t work for your team you could also assign times throughout the day.

  • You can do this workshop in our studio or we can come to you!

    We can bring sewing machines and everything we need to your space.

    We will need tables, chairs and a power source.

    Depending on how much ‘stuff’ we need to bring there may be an added charge for taxi costs.

  • We can provide a take home mending kit with equipment (such as needles and threads) and instructions if you would like it for all of your participants.

Sewing Machine Classes

  • Join us in our purpose built studio with up to 14 sewing machine spots and we can teach you how to use it and make an item you can take home or donate to charity.

  • Using a sewing machine is a life skill! You can all make a something you’ll treasure because you’ve made it yourself!

  • Choose from a range of products:

    Or come to us with an idea and we’ll see what we can get done!

  • We recommend at least 2 hours for this workshop.

    Make it a half day outing for your team!

    The more time we have the more we can get done, but a short workshop could work too.

  • You can do this workshop in our studio (ideal as we have all the sewing machines set up there!) or we can come to you!

    We can bring threads, fabrics sewing machines (if you want to use them!) and everything we need to your space.

    We will need tables, chairs and a power source.

  • We can create you a take home kit with instructions on how to make the item again!

  • We can help you make a collaborative banner you can display in your space. We can design it with you and make it come to life.

    Repairing or upcycling clothes can change how they feel about an item, making them more attached to it and keeping it for longer.

  • Participants can bring an item in with a hole or practice on our scrap fabrics. Or create a stand alone art piece.

    We will bring an array of fabrics threads and all equipment you might need.

    We can do this workshop by hand or with sewing machines. You can choose!

  • We recommend at least 1 - 2.5 hours for this workshop.

    The more time we have the more we can get done, but a short workshop could work for learning the technique and then it can be carried on at home.

  • You can do this workshop in our studio or we can come to you!

  • Sashiko is a centuries old Japanese stitching technique, the literal translation is ‘little stabs’. It can be used decoratively and for repair. The designs can be simple and functional or very detailed and ornate.

    Boro" is a Japanese term associated with the repeated reuse and repair of a garment. It usually refers to a garment that has been sashiko stitched.

  • It can be a gorgeously repetitive and meditative technique. It is beautiful and mindful way of giving new life to something worn or broken.

embroidery / Applique

  • Embroidery is a slow and mindful activity. You can use it to adorn garments and homewares to give them an extra special twist or even make a stand alone art piece.

    Applique when you add 1 fabric to another, this can be used in conjunction with embroidery.

    We’ll bring threads, needles, hoops, templates and oodles of inspiration.

    Your team will be hooked on stitching in no time!

  • A study by Dr Daisy Fancourt shows that craft can be a slow and mindful way of reducing stress, calming the mind and is becoming increasingly recognised as an effective way to combat anxiety and depression.

    Creativity can release dopamine which encourages cognitive flexibility, and reduces risk of dementia. It also encourages people to engage in low impact activities and lower stress levels. 

  • You can decide if you want to bring in items to sew on to such as old jeans or tired homewares.

    Or we can bring offcuts of fabrics to create a stand alone pieces.

    You might also want use embroidery to create a collaborative artwork that is going to hang in your space!

  • We recommend at least 1 hour for this workshop but the longer you do the more you will be able to learn.

    Embroidery can be a slow process so it might be that some people want to learn the basics and carry on in their own time!

  • We can bring our embroidery kit anywhere! We can come to you or you can come to us.

    All we need is somewhere to sit for this workshop. A table is useful but we could also sit on comfy sofas.

    This workshop is also available as an online session. We can send you out kits for participants so they can join in remotely.


  • We recommend sending your participants home with one of our embroidery kits for this workshop!

    We’ll include fabric, a needle, a small range of threads, embroidery hoop and our stitch instructions.

    We also have a video link we can send so you know what to do without us!
