workshops for schools

A group of children and an adult in a sewing class, working on sewing machines with fabric and sewing supplies on the table, with colorful fabric artwork displayed on the wall in the background.

We have been teaching sewing and textile skills to young people aged 6 to 16 for over 12 years.

We know how powerful hands-on making can be in sparking curiosity, boosting confidence, and helping students discover new talents.

Our workshops can empower students with practical skills, nurture eco-awareness, build confidence through creativity and support mindfulness.

‘‘ I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for the year 2 project. They just look outstanding. The kids and teachers were just pouring with compliments about every aspect of the project!’’

Year 5 Yinke Shonibare Inspired Sculptures

Our initial brief from a school was to weave creative textiles workshop into subjects already on their curriculum and link the work to an artist or designer. We worked with the teachers on idea development and designed a tailored plan.

For year 5 their challenge was to co-create a textiles sculpture from Ankara fabrics inspired by the work of British artist Yinke Shonibare.

The teachers introduced the students to the work of artist during their art classes and guided them in exploring the themes behind the project. Each student designed their own sculpture, and together the classes voted on a ‘final design’ to create as a group.

Over three sessions per class, we helped students break the chosen design into sections and create the final pieces. Along the way, we taught them hand-sewing skills, how to use a sewing machine and elements of garment construction. Students learned to work to a design brief while still bringing their own creativity to the project.

The workshops combined in-school sessions with small-group visits to our studio, giving students the chance to work on sewing machines in a dedicated creative space.

The finished sculptures were proudly displayed in the school’s end-of-year art show, celebrating the students’ hard work, teamwork, and creativity.
