Lewisham Migrant & Refugee Network
We have run multiple creative projects with LMRN’s women’s group.
For Black History Month 2024 we worked with the womens group on designing and making garments.
African Threads is an enriching project that celebrates the vibrant cultural heritage of African textiles, organised by LRMN Women's Group. This Black-led initiative aligns with the theme of #ReclaimingNarratives, providing a platform for Black women, many of whom are refugees, asylum seekers, and migrants (RASM) who have experienced gender-based violence, to express their identities and share their personal stories through the lens of traditional African fabrics.
The project will include several culturally immersive activities, such as a learn-and-share session where participants will delve into the history and cultural significance of African textiles like Nigerian Àdìrẹ and Ghanaian Batik. These sessions will be led by the Black women in the group, who will bring their unique perspectives and connections to these fabrics, fostering a deep appreciation for their rich heritage.
In addition, the project will feature sewing workshops facilitated by Make Mee Studio, a local social enterprise with extensive experience in delivering sewing workshops to diverse groups. Participants will learn to create garments and accessories from traditional African fabrics, which will be showcased in a public fashion show and exhibition. This event will not only highlight their creativity but also serve as a powerful medium for them to share their stories and reclaim their narratives within the broader context of Black history.
A community meal featuring a variety of African dishes will further foster a sense of community and cultural appreciation, bringing the women together to share in the richness of African cuisine. This event is designed to be inclusive, welcoming all members of the women’s group while being led and shaped by the Black participants.
