Introduction To Sashiko & Boro

Sunday 8th March 2pm - 4pm

Sashiko is a centuries old Japanese stitching technique, the literal translation is ‘little stabs’. It can be used decoratively and for repair. The designs can be simple and functional or very detailed and ornate.

It can be a gorgeously repetitive and meditative technique. It is beautiful and mindful way of giving new life to something worn or broken.

Boro" is a Japanese term associated with the repeated reuse and repair of a garment. It usually refers to a garment that has been sashiko stitched.

It’s also Repair Week A great time to get into mending, if you’ve not tried it before. Did you know if the active life on an item of clothing is extended by 9 months it would reduce carbon waste and water footprints by around 20-30% each. WRAP

You can bring your holey item and get straight to it or we’ll have plenty of fabrics scraps you can practice on.

  • This session is open to everyone. No previous sewing experience necessary.

  • Feel free to bring along your items with holes, we can talk about the most suitable techniques to help you get mending. Or you are free to practise on our scrap fabrics to try out different techniques. You'll also leave with our handy sashiko guidebook so you can carry on at home.

You can sashiko almost anything but heavier weight woven items like jackets or jeans work well.

(thinner items like t-shirts or shirts can be much tricker as the fabrics are finer, other mending techniques might be more suitable or we may want to use different thread.
